Alternate Approvers vs. Substitutes

Alternate approvers (permanent solution) are setup in the workflows and can approve anytime they are required to do so. Alternate approvers can receive email notification as well.  Can have up to 5 alternate approvers per level.  

Substitute approvers (Temporary) can only approve during a period they were granted
